Choosing the Right Metal
Platinum and gold are both beautiful, but have distinct differences beyond just the price. Gold is the most common metal used in jewelry, and unlike platinum, is easy to polish and repair. Neither platinum nor gold will tarnish, but platinum jewelry is much more resistant to damage than gold jewelry. Platinum is more rare than gold and therefore more expensive.
When choosing an engagement ring remember to match the metal color with any existing jewelry she may already own. This will allow her to wear the jewelry more often and co-ordinate it with other pieces. How Much Should I Spend?
When it comes to diamond engagement rings, certainly the ‘wow’ factor is important, but you should not spend more than you are comfortable with. A budget of two or three months salary is a common guideline but is not always adhered to. The bottom line is that there are no set rules on how much you should spend on an engagement ring.
Never start thinking that the ring you purchase somehow determines that degree of your love. That will only set you up to make a poor purchasing decision. The diamond engagement ring you purchase is an expression of your love and not a measure of it.

What Size of Diamond Should I Purchase?
There is no right answer but there are several guidelines you can use to ensure that the purchase you make will be perfect for her. Just keep in mind that you want a ring that she will be proud of, confidently show to all her friends and family and treasure for the rest of her life. Always keep quality and value in mind along with your budget.
First, you should consider her expectations If your fiancée has said to you “I’m just waiting for that 1 carat rock to land on my finger!” you may have to honor that expectation and ensure your diamond choice is at least 1 carat. If she has told you to find the best diamond just for her, you may be able to look for a smaller, higher quality diamond. Ask her some innocent questions on her jewelry tastes and listen for her answers. Although it has not been scientifically proven, many women desire at least a 1 carat diamond ring.
Buying an Engagement Ring – The Element of Surprise
Obviously the only way to know for sure that you have found the perfect ring would be to have shopped together with your loved one. Unfortunately, this can take away from the surprise. Remember that it is not uncommon to discuss engagement ring preferences with your partner. If you do want to make it a complete surprise, you will need to do some investigating:
1) Speak with one of your partners closest friends or family members (her sister or mother will likely be helpful) for hints on what types of styles she prefers to wear.
2) What color of jewelry does your partner normally where? If she typically wears yellow gold earrings or necklaces, then she may prefer a yellow gold engagement ring as well. Keep in mind popular fashion these days are platinum or white gold settings.
3) Flip through a catalogue and land (by happenstance of course) on the jewelry rings section. Make some comment about some different jewelry styles you see in the catalogue and hope your partner will share some of her preferences with you.

Diamond Fluorescence

Diamond fluorescence is easily one of the most misunderstood and over-rated characteristics of a diamond. A diamond is said to have fluorescence when it self illuminates due to exposure to radiation such as ultraviolet light or Under normal lighting conditions, except in rare instances, this effect is not discernable to the eye. To see a diamond fluoresce, it must be viewed under black (ultra violet) lighting as shown in the image to the right. |

Diamond Fluorescence Rating and Price
The amount of fluorescence in a diamond is rated as none (sometimes shown as negligible), faint, slight, medium, strong, very strong, and intense (sometimes shown as distinct). We do not sell diamonds with a fluorescence rating stronger than strong blue.
A strong blue, or very strong blue fluorescence can rarely cause the diamond to appear milky or cloudy. For this reason, a diamond with any level of fluorescence typically retails for less than a diamond rated as having no fluorescence. Is this fear of fluorescence justified? Not really. If a medium to strong fluorescence reduces the price then that just works to the purchaser’s benefit. We will examine your diamond for you on the off chance that the fluorescence is affecting the diamonds appearance.
GIA (Gemological Institute of America), the world leader in diamond grading and gemstone identification underwent an extensive study of diamond fluorescence in 1997. This is an excerpt from that study:
“For the average observer, meant to represent the jewelry buying public, no systematic effects of fluorescence were detected. Even the experienced observers did not consistently agree on the effects of fluorescence from one stone to the next. In general, the results revealed that strongly blue fluorescent diamonds were perceived to have a better color appearance when viewed table-up, with no discernible trend table-down. Most observers saw no relationship between fluorescence and transparency.”
Diamond Fluorescence Rating and Diamond Color
In the 1920’s, diamonds with a blue fluorescence and a color rating of colorless were referred to as “blue-white” and were highly sought after. Unfortunately, sales people used the term too loosely for any diamond with fluorescence and the term “blue-white” was outlawed by US trade practices laws.
While fluorescence will normally have no impact on a diamond’s clarity, there are those who claim it can potentially have some minor value towards a diamond’s color. The idea is that the slight yellowish tinge is cancelled out to some degree by the slight bluish hue of the fluorescence. This idea is not strongly supported by the GIA findings in their study on fluorescence.
What Makes a Diamond Fluoresce?
When a diamond is in its natural state, its electrons are stable. If when a diamond is exposed to UV radiation the electrons become excited they move in and out of a high energy state. When the electron relaxes from its high energy state back to its natural low energy state, it releases the excess energy. This released energy is measured in its wavelength. A emitted wavelength of 420 to 450 nanometers will appear as a bluish hue.
97% of diamonds that fluoresce display a blue fluorescence. The remaining 3% of fluorescent diamonds display colors of violet, green, yellow, orange, and red. Buying a colorless or near colorless diamond that has a fluorescence other than blue is not normally recommended. We do not sell diamonds that have a fluorescence that is not in the blue range.
Considerations When Buying a Diamond with Fluorescence

The bottom line is that the diamond’s fluorescence will not have a noticeable effect on your stone unless you are someplace where there is UV lighting (maybe a nightclub?). There is a noticeable difference in price however, so buying a diamond with a medium to strong fluorescence can be an attractive deal. Diamond Clarity
Clarity refers to how clear a diamond is in terms of visible imperfections (called inclusions) when using a 10x magnifying loupe. These inclusions can be things like small carbon spots or mineral crystals, cloudiness, or any form of visible distortion on the diamond’s surface. Clarity grades of I1,I2 or I3 have inclusions visible to the naked eye without the need of a magnifying lens and are considered to be of a lesser quality. I1,I2 or I3 clarity grades are not available at Novori.
Flawless (FL)
Refers to diamonds which under the inspection of a skilled observer using a 10x microscope cannot see any internal or external imperfections.
Internally Flawless (IF)
An internally flawless diamond has no visible internal imperfections, but may have minor surface blemishes.
Both FL and IF are very rare and beautiful diamonds.
Flawless (FL)
Refers to diamonds which under the inspection of a skilled observer using a 10x microscope cannot see any internal or external imperfections.
Internally Flawless (IF)
An internally flawless diamond has no visible internal imperfections, but may have minor surface blemishes.
Both FL and IF are very rare and beautiful diamonds.
Very Slightly Included
(VS1-VS2)
Refers to diamonds which have very small inclusions that are difficult for a skilled observer to locate using a 10x microscope. Usually these inclusions cannot be seen without the aid of a 30x microscope. In rare instances, with larger stones, some VS1/VS2 inclusions can be seen with the naked eye, after first being located using a microscope.
Slightly Included (SI1-SI2)
Refers to diamonds which have small inclusions that can be easily located using a 10x microscope. In some instances, such inclusions can be seen with the naked eye, after first being located using a 10x microscope.
SI1 and SI2 diamonds will give you the largest stone for the least amount of money and are consided by many as a good value.
